SANfrancisco
Last thursday I returned from my first visit to San Francisco. I thought it sounded fun to take the train because I had never travelled by train before in America (plus it was much cheaper). The ride was quite long, but very scenic -and the train was much more comfortable than I imagined. Upon arrival, I met up with some friends who had just completed a 10 day silent meditation course in northern cali.
The city is beautiful. Definitely the cleanest city I've ever been in -and everyone was weirdly nice and friendly. It felt sort of like a trip to Disneyland. In a good way.
We stayed in the San Francisco Downtown Hostel which I would recommend to anyone looking to save a dime or two. It's location was fantastic, right in the middle of Union Square; we were within walking distance of just about every shop imaginable. The food of course was incredible just about everywhere we went. The coolest dining experience we had was at a restaurant called, Opaque. It's conception is quite unique; all the servers are legally blind, and you dine in the dark. Pitch black. It was really fun, and the food was delicious. I ordered a cherry-braised duck and mushrooms with a side of steamed grated squash -it was incredible.

One night, we saw the traveling broadway production of a musical I had never heard of before, Next To Normal. I went in with no expectations and it was really, really good. If it comes to your city or you're in New York, definitely check it out.
One of the best trips I've been on yet, and I will definitely be back!

loratab, time off work, jamba juice, music, bed, books, and movies. what more could you ask of a surgery?
The Fighter, I think one of my new favorite movies. I've seen it three times. Awesome performances from Amy Adams, Christian Bale, and Mark Wahlberg. Great direction.. great story.. great acting from minor leads.. great all around.
highly recommend |
and I've been re-reading one of my favorite books for the third time:
GaGa's Back
I have to say, I was expecting something a little bit more original for Gaga's first single, but I suppose it's always easy to be a critic. It definitely grows on you. It's very Madonna, Express Yourself, with an Alphabeat vibe. A solid pop-anthem with a positive message. (CLICK SINGLE COVER TO DOWNLOAD). The song is purposefully direct and simple, so I hope her more creative, deeper side will emerge in the rest of the album.
*This week she's also on the cover of Vogue for the first time, photographed by Mario Testino, in a cool 1910's get up. » See The Slideshow «
THE SINGLE (i think it sounds like this group)

View In iTunes (to pre-order)
Although it hasn't been released in the US yet, I got this album today. I might be biased because she sang an entire song to me at one of her concerts, but I think this girl's brilliant. The alb's magnif. If you also have british friends that can help you get it, or have other internet means of obtaining music, get it as soon as possible. Or just pre-order it if you're patient enough. It's well worth it.

LOS city of ANGELES
If I was Oprah, I would give my audience free 10hr road trips on "My Favorite Things" episode. My love for them is incomprehensible. As a kid it was: "Are we there yet?" Now it's: "Dammit, we're here." Ten straight hours sitting in a small moving compartment should almost definitely seem undesirable. The drive from Salt Lake to LA isn't always the most scenic drive either. Few parts are stunning, while the rest is just pretty blah and plain --plains? Well they're plain. But with the right playlist, right conversation, right amount of AC, right company.. I can think of little else I'd rather be doing. Although I suppose if sunny LA is your destination (in relation to your own hypothermic hometown), the actual arrival isn't too bad. Lucky for us, the weekend we went, LA was experiencing a heat wave. So it was about 78 degrees for us the entire four days.
We met lots of fun people, had a fun night on the beach, a night in the city, a night in Wee Hoe (west hollywood), a couple days in Santa Monica -it was juuuust neat.
Among the many colorful people we met just happened to be the fabulous Amy Adams. Yes, the celebrity. We had just exited Club Avalon on Hollywood Blvd @ 2am, to discover a large movie set for the new Muppets Movie (woo) in the middle of the street. But our minor disappointment was appeased when Amy Adams herself came -of course - leaping and singing 15 feet in front of us. With it being so late, we were almost the only people observing. So between every take we'd obnoxiously wave at her till she noticed. Unfortunately photography was not allowed, but she briefly greeted us, and pranced away. We watched her film for about an hour, and she even yelled goodbye and wished us a safe trip home when she saw us leaving. We were starstruck for the rest of the night. Oh ya, and Mila Kunis was also on set, which I thought was quite a contrasting film choice after her role in Black Swan. Pretty cool to see her too!
Going from 78 degrees to 21 degrees upon our return to UT, was not the easiest of adjustments.
